Donald Trump Nominates Dr. Ben Carson to lead HUD

HUD President-elect Donald Trump has nominated retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson to run the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Dr. Carson has taken Trump on a tour of blighted Detroit neighborhoods and has stated that he feels he can make a significant contribution to making inner cities great for everyone. In a statement this morning nominating Dr. Carson to his cabinet, Trump praised Carson as “brilliant” and “passionate about strengthening communities.” This comes in stark contrast to a previous statement Carson released, indicating that he did not feel fit for a cabinet position, despite having run for president. He will now oversee a $47 billion budget in a governmental agency meant to serve millions of low-income families relying on things like vouchers and rental assistance. Carson must first be confirmed by the Senate, despite concerns raised by housing professionals about his lack of experience, with the president of the National Low Income Housing Coalition, Diane Yentel, referring to the appointment as “surprising and concerning.” Carson’s appointment was not a total surprise, however, considering the president-elect had tweeted about the possibility two weeks ago.
